OUTLAWS OF ORION

Being involved in every department, gave me a strong understanding of the broader machinations of production.

OVERVIEW
The game is a top-down, online multiplayer, puzzler/hero-shooter with a strong emphasis on narrative. It was an honor to have our project chosen to represent LaSalle College’s Game and Level Design program, and a privilege to host a booth with it at Comiccon and MIGS 2024.
My Roles:
Project Manager, Art Director, 2D Art, Narrative Design, Level Design

The Full Story
In January 2024, I joined 17 other passionate classmates in forming Late4Class Games. Initially choosing roles in 2D Art, Narrative, and Level Design, I was later also elected as project manager and art director, an honor I embraced fully.

Throughout the four months of production, we acted as a professional studio. As the PM, I recognized the need for flexibility in managing a diverse team with varying engagements, and I adjusted my approach and expectations based on the individual. To maintain clear visibility of progress for the team, I created and regularly updated tasks on Jira, ensuring everyone’s work was tracked efficiently. I also fostered open communication by conducting daily stand-ups and one-on-one meetings to address progress and resolve blockers, ensuring that everyone felt supported and valued, boosting team morale.

In collaboration with co-manager Saryat Khan, we developed a timeline and milestones for the project. Our goal was to create a polished vertical slice of an online hero-shooter set in space, with RPG mechanics and a strong narrative focus. Our plan was:
-
First-Playable: Core mechanics such as movement, camera control, and combat + Basic visuals.
-
Online functionality framework.
-
Loot and inventory system, along with most UI elements.
-
Incorporate the narrative, art assets, and quality assurance.

As PM and art director, I drove both the technical and design teams in parallel. I conducted weekly meetings with the artists, ensuring artistic cohesion. I balanced artistic vision with functionality, making sure assets were visually coherent and attractive, while maintaining framerate integrity. Key actions I took to achieve this were:
-
Creating comprehensive documentation outlining visual principles, color schemes, and design standards.
-
Standardizing texture resolutions and polygon counts across similar asset types.
-
Providing regular feedback to artists, striking a balance between design standards and creative freedom.
-
Ensuring character textures have enough contrast to be visible on any background.
-
Crafting a distinct visual language to convey gameplay elements and environmental storytelling, such as using a futuristic art deco style to depict the "Old Gods" faction.

By the end of the project, we created a polished vertical slice that was chosen to represent LaSalle's Game and Level Design program. Our game was also showcased with a booth at Comiccon Montreal 2024 and MIGS 2024, which was an unforgettable experience. I’m extremely proud of the final result, and the team spirit we cultivated along the way was extraordinary.
